Jewel Glass 2009

Exciting things are happening at New Ravenna these days…

We launched our new glass line at Coverings in Chicago–preliminary samples and chip boxes (49 colors) just shipped to participating showrooms last week. The samples above showcase the basic field we sell in a 2″ x 8″ size brick. You can only imagine how thrilling it is for me to design with an almost unlimited pallet of colors.

Like all the glass patterns shown here, Tamara (left) and Edie (right) can be made in stone as well. Below we restrained ourselves and made some classic cream and white mosaic patterns (quartz, moonstone and agate)–what do you think?

We think they’re pretty gorgeous if we do say so ourselves!New Ravenna has been designing and fabricating bespoke glass mosaics for some time now (see header above), but we felt the need to simplify our offerings because our clients were feeling overwhelmed–we can make any pattern in stone or glass, in any size or style, so it’s not uncommon for even talented designers to become paralyzed by the possibilities.

Plus, we saw the need for reasonably priced fields to go with patterns that are more suited for feature walls. An added bonus is that for most of these simple patterns, we use special technology that makes the tiles exactly the same size–we call them Precision Cut–with edges that don’t feel sharp. Similar tiles in the marketplace lack this special edge and architectural sizing.

The above patterns (in peacock topaz and jade) would look fabulous on the inside of a hot-tub, in a spa area, or as an entire wall behind a vanity or two.

Everyone here adores this green:

One of my personal favorite palettes is below: tortoise shell, tiger’s eye and agate:

And then of course grays, the new neutrals, have so much range and depth. This gray (lavastone, on top) reminds me of driftwood:

Did you know that in addition to his incredible stained glass creations, Louis Comfort Tiffany had a glass mosaic studio? My friend Michael Golden alerted me to a new book that I just acquired–it’s an amazing compilation of Tiffany designed and fabricated glass mosaics. Use this link to the book on Amazon if you care to buy this inspiring tome.

Here we’ve used some iridescent purple glass which is reminiscent of Tiffany’s favrile product. Soon I will post an image of one of our amazingly talented artisans making a fountain floor which will ship to the island of Mustique. Hmmm. I see an installation photo shoot in my future…

  1. Those are gorgeous! Glad I found you. (Ok, not so hard to do when the rest of the designers are ooh-ing and aah-ing.) ;)

  2. Really beautiful Sara!

  3. Wow! What GORGEOUS colors and patterns. I'm really partial to the tangerine tones (and the "driftwood") and I also see the appeal of your favorites. I'm sure they were a success at Coverings.

  4. I can't wait for the day when I am done renting and can design my own space and use your tiles. You just made me want to reach my dream goals even more!! Thank you!!
