Amazing Grace: The Giovanni Barbieri Collection from New Ravenna Mosaics

From Cabinet & Furniture Trends & Information

I sometimes think of art as a time machine…Mr. Barbieri lives in the walled medieval city of Castelfranco, located in the Veneto region of Italy. The city was founded in 1199 and still has the remains of a 12th century castle, replete with ancient walls and floors that have been worn by the hands and feet of untold thousands over the centuries. He was inspired by the design principles of the Bauhaus, but also, I think, by those ancient stones-and no doubt northern Italy itself. I still maintain that it is the Modern Fertile Crescent, because so much that is innovative seems to come from that small portion of the world. In any case Mr. Barbieri is devoted to turning stone into legend, which he does by utilizing a process so innovative that he was actually able to patent it.

┬áThese tiles would make an accent wall or floor that is nothing short of stunning. More than an accent wall, it would be a conversation piece, because people would be sure to ask how old the tiles are and where you got them and if, perchance, there are any more available… Compared to the many, many antiquities in Europe, our historical edifices are very small potatoes indeed. Something like a wall from these tiles might get the old ticker pumping a bit, though.
